The Plant Cell

Nicotiana benthamiana, a model plant organism from the tobacco family, is important in biotechnology and fundamental research on plant cell biology and diseases.

This image represents a single jigsaw puzzle-shaped epidermal cell expressing the jellyfish gene encoding for “green fluorescent protein” (a Nobel Prize winning technology). The multi-color cytoplasm and gray nucleus (which house the plant DNA) and other molecules can be labeled with a rainbow of different color fluorescent proteins and imaged in living cells to understand how they grow and respond to microorganisms and the environment.

This image was created by Dr. Kirk Czymmek from the Advanced Bioimaging Laboratory at the Danforth Center
